OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADoug Gillis was born in Akron, Ohio. Fascinated by the various applications of design, aesthetic and visual arts, he studied graphic and architectural design as well as art history, graduating with a BS in Industrial Design from Ohio State University.

Before discovering his love of glass, Doug enjoyed a stimulating career as an art director in Orlando, the Netherlands, and Los Angeles.

Artist Statement

I make kiln-worked sculptural glass wall art with the goal of creating a modern vision of an ancient art form. My approach is modular and contemporary based on the aesthetic styling of the European Bauhaus designs I studied extensively at Ohio State University. The processes and materials themselves inspire me to explore and exhibit art’s elements: line, pattern, texture, balance, color, light and composition.

Using contemporary abstraction I enjoy visualizing broad themes: Time, Sound, Communication, and Landscape. I also challenge myself to push the limits of the fusing process by integrating natural elements, such as cottonwood leaves alongside man-made materials like wire—often with surprising effects. The results are the aesthetic rewards of letting heat, my imagination, and Earth’s elements conspire to express themselves as fine art, unconstrained by the limitations of utility and function.

All of Doug’s glass is suspended from a 3/4″ riser which discretely rests upon a square of reflective satin anodized aluminum. This unique mounting produces a 3D wall sculpture of light, color, and shadow. Wired and ready to hang from a deep cradled wood art frame. His work includes;

Reeds (Wall Art)

This multi-layered fused glass wall art uses various sized glass rods of brown and turquoise to cross a river of textured silver leaf to create the organic, natural look of “Reeds”.

A thin layer of silver leaf is encased between the glass to provide additional depth and dimension. The transparent glass suspends above a square of satin anodized aluminum producing a 3D sculpture of light and shadow.

Timeless (Wall Art)

Inspired by the gears of a clock, this multi-layered fused glass wall art uses a contemporary palette of pale green, champagne and pale purple glass. A thin layer of silver leaf is encased between the glass to provide additional depth and dimension. The transparent multi-coloreds glass suspends above a square of satin anodized aluminum producing a 3D sculpture of light and shadow.

Ocean Bubbles (Wall Art)

Look deeply into the mixture of deep blues and sea green of this multi-layered fused glass  artwork and imagine tiny translucent bubbles resting lightly on the surface of a tidal pool.

A thin layer of silver leaf is encased between the glass to provide additional depth and dimension. The transparent glass suspends above a square of satin anodized aluminum producing a 3D sculpture of light and shadow.

Fool’s Gold Bits (Wall Art)

Bits of “gold” virtually leap from the “river” in this fused multi-layered reactive glass, silver leaf, and frit wall art. A larger piece, “Fool’s Gold,” and additional miniatures are ready for mixing and matching for an impressive and shimmering wall display. This opaque glass suspends above a square of satin anodized aluminum producing a 3D sculpture of light and shadow.

Blue Wave Crush…

The “ocean” virtually leaps from this multi-layered fused reactive glass and frit artwork. The vanilla and turquoise glass emulates the tranquility of sand and sea. This opaque glass suspends above a square of satin anodized aluminum producing a 3D sculpture of light and shadow.

Celebrate (Wall Art)

Inspired by life’s joyous moments, this multi-layered fused glass wall art uses black satin, white, amber and red glass to create a formal and fun celebration. This opaque glass suspends above a square of satin anodized aluminum producing a 3D sculpture of light and shadow.
