Arizona Petrified Wood: This remarkable Petrified Forest in Arizona is the second largest in the world, the largest one being the Madagascar deposit. It also holds second place in age at 200 million years, while Madagascar is about 220 million. This Arizona forest once sat much closer to the equator but shifted to its present position as the landmass known as Pangaea broke up and parts shifted north. The forest is now located near the town of Holbrook in northern Arizona and is a popular attraction to millions of visitors each year. It is a remarkable sight to see exposed logs of petrified wood strewn about the landscape and blazing in the sunlight. This fossil wood is also called “Rainbow Wood” for its amazing colors.
