Lens Based Art

This March, Gallery of Modern Masters celebrates the work of successful lens based artist and photographer, Bob Coates. Join them for the opening reception of “Lens Based Art featuring Bob Coates” Friday, March 6th from 5-7pm during 1st Friday in the Galleries.

A professional photographer for over 20 years, Bob Coates loves his medium but enjoys pushing the boundaries of what photography should be. Borrowing techniques from many different  genres including photography, watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, Bob combines a little bit of each into artistic representations that he calls ‘PhotoSynthesis’ and ‘Lens Based Art.’ Yes, each of Bob’s pieces start with the shutter click of a lens but it is in the studio thereafter where the magic begins. Not only are images blended using standard techniques from the digital realm, but Bob will also include techniques that mimic artist’s brushwork creating pieces that look like magnificent paintings versus the standard photographs that any layman can create. His works are created using not just standard photograph imagery but also uses mandalas, fantasy and impressionistic images.

Says Bob, “I am really excited about some of my new water color work. The image that helped to represent the USA in the Photograph World Cup, “Awaking” has been reimagined as a 40”x 40”.”

Bob was recently honored as the featured artist by the Friends of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuges. His piece, “Festival of the Cranes” was selected as the image to represent the entire festival both in print collateral as well as digitally

Join Gallery of Modern Masters and Bob Coates, Friday, March 6th from 5-7p.m. for the opening reception of “Lens Based Art.” Meet the artist, enjoy small bites, and explore fabulous art.
